Community Involvement

Thanks to the generosity of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Representatives and Staff across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, we were able to donate over 150 Lego sets in honor of this years 'Kid with Courage' Aiden Johnson. Aiden's Legacy is a wonderful organization that raises money for Norton Children's Hospital and Lego set donations for the children staying at the hospital.  Thank you to Aiden and his family for sharing your story and for bringing some joy and hope to our days.

CongratulationsMitch Barnes on receiving the 2016 Community Service - Most Exceptional Volunteer -Award from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation.

In 1988, the Barnes family established the Duchenne Research Education and Miracle (DREAM) Foundation in honor of their son Mitchell. Since that time Mitch and his family, through the Foundation, have given tirelessly to assist children and families with physical disabilities. In addition to raising funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research, the DREAM Foundation also gives back to the Louisville community through the redesign or creation of playgrounds that are accessible to all children.

In addition to the honor, Mitch received a $25,000 grant that will be used to continue the work of establishing accessible playgrounds throughout Louisville. Thank you to The Northwestern Mutual Foundation for acknowledging the community service of the Barnes family and for giving over $4.8 million to non-profits on behalf of its Financial Representatives.

Northwestern Mutual Donates $250,000 to Kosair Children’s Hospital to Fight Childhood Cancer

Presenting check with Rick Pitino

Pictured from left: University of Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino, Northwestern Mutual Managing Partner in Kentucky Dan Rivers, Kosair Children’s Hospital President Tom Kmetz, and Dr. Kenneth Lucas, head of pediatric oncology at Kosair Children’s and the University of Louisville Medical School.

Northwestern Mutual donated $250,000 to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville resulting from the sale of souvenir pieces of the floor on which the University of Louisville men’s basketball team won the 2013 national championship. The funds will support research being conducted by Kenneth Lucas, M.D., chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation for the University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics and his team of researchers.

The company acquired the floor following the 2013 tournament and turned sections of it into souvenir pieces for fans of the national champion Cardinals. This is the second year in a row that Northwestern Mutual has used the NCAA championship floor to raise money for charity. Following the University of Kentucky’s win in the 2012 tournament, Northwestern Mutual auctioned off several hundred pieces of that year’s floor, which netted $202,000 for pediatric cancer research which was split between Kosair Children’s Hospital and Kentucky Children’s Hospital.

“We’re thrilled to be able to support childhood cancer research in this way through the work of Dr. Lucas and his team,” said Dan Rivers, Northwestern Mutual managing partner in Kentucky. “The real stars of this effort are the children who are battling pediatric cancer every day, and in buying these floor pieces U of L fans have delivered a critical assist in that fight. We’re honored to help make that happen.”

Northwestern Mutual donated the massive center-court portion of the floor featuring the Final Four® logo – more than 570 square feet and weighing some 10,000 pounds – to the University of Louisville. It hangs in the lobby of its home court arena, the KFC Yum! Center.

Final Four floor

For the second year in a row, Northwestern Mutual is using the 2013 NCAA®Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship floor to raise money and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. The company acquired the floor following the 2013 tournament and has turned sections of it into souvenir pieces for fans of the national champion University of Louisville Cardinals, with proceeds benefitting Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville. Cardinal fans can purchase their piece of UofL basketball history at Proceeds from the sale will specifically help support research being conducted by Kenneth Lucas, M.D., chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Kosair Children’s Hospital and division chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation for the University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics.

"Northwestern Mutual’s support continues to provide much needed funds to work on ground-breaking research that can help thousands of children,” said Thomas D. Kmetz, division president of Women’s and Children’s services and president, Kosair Children’s Hospital. ”We’re very appreciative that they’ve stepped up again to help fight pediatric cancer.”

University of Louisville head coach Rick Pitino has autographed 1,000 of the souvenir pieces to raise even more money for the cause. “As exciting as it was for us to win the national championship this year, it’s also exciting to be part of this effort to raise money for cancer research,” said Pitino. “It’s all about giving back to the community, and Northwestern Mutual is providing a great example of how to be a good corporate citizen.”

Northwestern Mutual donated the center court logo portion of the floor to the University of Louisville to hang in the lobby of its basketball arena, the KFC Yum! Center.

Northwestern Mutual Donates $200,000 to Fight Pediatric Cancer: NCAA® Championship Floor is Auctioned

Northwestern Mutual was recently in the news for their donation of more than $200,000 toward the fight against pediatric cancer in Kentucky. This followed a week-long online auction of commemorative pieces of the floor on which the University of Kentucky (UK) men's basketball team won its eighth national championship last spring.

The top 300 bidders pledged a total of $201,803 on three-hundred 12"x18" pieces of the floor, each autographed by UK coach John Calipari. The proceeds will be divided equally between Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville and Kentucky Children's Hospital in Lexington.

Dan Rivers, Managing Partner, commented "we are pleased not only to raise this money but also to raise awareness of the issue of pediatric cancer."

Northwestern Mutual purchased the floor following the men's basketball tournament at the Superdome in New Orleans. The floor was obtained with the intent to create philanthropic opportunities in local communities that Northwestern Mutual serves.

Northwestern Mutual donated parts of the basketball court used at the national championship of the 2012 NCAA® Division I men's basketball tournament to the University of Kentucky (UK) and to raise funds for charities located in Kentucky.

“We owe a big thanks to Northwestern Mutual for making this contribution happen,” UK Coach John Calipari said. “Adding the championship floor to Rupp Arena will further contribute to the magic surrounding this building and this program. It will not only enhance what will be the gold standard for locker rooms across the country, it will serve as a fitting tribute to a special team.”

The UK men's basketball team won its eighth national championship earlier this year and will soon have a new locker room in Rupp Arena. More than 3,000 square feet of the floor will be installed in the locker rooms, putting a tangible reminder of the team's championship season literally under foot for Wildcat players as they prepare for games beginning this fall.

Additionally, a portion of the floor will be divided into one thousand souvenir pieces and signed by Coach Calipari. Northwestern Mutual will auction a portion of these signed pieces to benefit Kentucky-based nonprofits. A significant number will go towards Northwestern Mutual's philanthropic focus to fight against pediatric cancer. In addition, some of the pieces will be donated to The Calipari Foundation.

Further details of the charity auctions will be released later this fall.
